The Next Valentine's Ball will be held on February 21, 2009.

The 2008 Valentine's Ball was the 20th Annual Event in which we have raised more than $1,134,000

History of the Event

The 2007 Valentine's Ball was the 19th Annual Event.  It started in 1989 and ran for 9 years as a fundraiser for the local American Cancer Society Chapter.  In order to have an impact in the fight against cancer we separated from the American Cancer Society.  This ensures us that every single dollar raised goes directly to our cause.  Each year, request for proposals are sent to our Hospitals and Universities in order to identify recipients research and clinical projects that need funding.  We then choose from the proposals that have been submitted.  To date, the event has raised over $1,000,000 which made 2007 our "Million Dollar Year" and getting stronger each year.  The best years were the last two years with over 450 in attendance and over $100,000 raised over those years.  This event is completely underwritten by the Riviera, which means 100% of funds raised go directly to the cause.

This Year's Recipients

This year’s recipients for the 20th Annual United-4 A Cure Cancer Fundraiser are Mayo Clinic, Cancer Research Center of Hawaii , University of Chicago and Loyola University of Chicago .

  • Mayo Clinic will be using the funding received to further apply recent advances in genomics and protemomics research in the efforts to find a cure for pancreatic cancer.

  • Dr. Haining Yang of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii along with Dr. Michele Carbone will be attempting validation of serological markers for early detection of Mesothelioma.

  • Dr. Stanley Liaus at University of Chicago is looking at the role of the protein STAT-1 in the recurrence of tumors previously treated with radiation during prostate cancer treatment.

  • Dr. Maurizio Bocchetta from Loyola University of Chicago is researching non-smoker type small cell lung cancer by using notch inhibitors.  Notch receptors are antennas that allow cancer cells to receive signals from each other and activate one another which makes them more resistant to death.

  • Dr. Stephen Skapak with University of Chicago will be studying Rhabdomyosarcoma (the most common form of childhood sarcoma or skeletal muscle cancer) by looking at developing more potent drugs to promote muscle differentiation in the treatment of children.

As always, Riviera Country Club and Pinnacle Custom Homes underwrites the entire cost of the event.  One hundred percent of all proceeds from ticket sales, ad book sales, raffle, silent auction, club events and personal donations go directly to our recipients.
